This text is based upon a midrash as retold by Edmund Fleg and it can be found in the Reform Movement’s Gates of Prayer siddur. When I first read the midrash, I was taken with its structure, its spiritual boldness, and its message. May we continue to be partners in creation, making the world a more holy place through our deeds.

And Isaac said to God
God of the world, when You made light
You said in Your Torah that it was good

And it was good (It was good)
Hiney Tov Me’od (It was good)
God created the whole world
And it was good

And Isaac said to God
When You made heaven and earth,
You said in Your Torah that they were good
And it was good...

And Isaac said to God
God of the world when you made people--
Why did you did NOT say in Your Torah that we were good?

God said to Isaac
Cause I have not perfected you
But through Torah and mitzvot
And all the good things that you do

You can perfect the world yourself
Things will be like they should
When you make the world a better place
Then I will call you good.
And it was good...
